RTL is bringing artificial intelligence directly into its television schedule with the launch of a new format that will mark the first regular use of an AI-generated presenter on German free-to-air television. The initiative represents another step in broadcasters’ experimentation with generative AI beyond behind-the-scenes production tools.
The project centres on “KI-Welt mit Kim”, a new short-form programme presented by Kim, an entirely AI-generated host. The format will air on RTL and is designed to explain developments in artificial intelligence in an accessible way, covering new technologies, trends and their potential impact on everyday life.
Rather than attempting to disguise the technology, RTL is making Kim’s artificial nature an explicit part of the programme. The virtual presenter has been developed to give the format a recognisable identity while demonstrating how generative AI can itself become part of the content viewers see on screen.
The programme is being produced in collaboration with RTL Deutschland’s AI Circle, bringing together expertise from different areas of the broadcaster. Its introduction reflects RTL’s wider exploration of artificial intelligence and how the technology can be integrated into media production and storytelling.
The move is particularly significant because AI-generated presenters have so far remained relatively uncommon within mainstream European television. While synthetic voices, automated production and generative tools are increasingly being tested by media companies, putting a fully virtual personality directly in front of a mass free-TV audience takes that experimentation considerably further.
For RTL, the project provides both a new programme and a real-world test of how audiences respond to synthetic on-screen talent. It could also offer an early indication of where AI presenters may fit within traditional broadcasting as media groups look for new ways to combine automation, digital production and established television formats.
