Vodafone TV Adds a New Dimension to VodafoneThree’s UK Convergence Strategy

0

VodafoneThree’s upcoming TV service could strengthen its position in the UK multiplay market by adding a missing entertainment component to its fixed and mobile portfolio. According to GlobalData, the launch represents an important step for the operator, although stronger differentiation may be needed to compete with established pay-TV rivals.

Set to launch in October 2026, Vodafone TV will differ from many competing telecom TV propositions by being available to mobile customers without requiring a fixed broadband subscription. This gives VodafoneThree an opportunity to bring television services to its substantial mobile customer base while potentially creating a route towards additional broadband and mobile-plan sales.

The service is built on Netgem’s PLEIO platform, with Netgem also responsible for content provision and day-to-day operations. Vodafone TV will bring together live television through Freely, on-demand programming, streaming platforms, music, cloud gaming and Google Play applications through an Android TV device.

At launch, the proposition will include Netflix and HBO Max Standard with Ads, Freely, more than 150 additional live channels and a catalogue exceeding 300 cloud games. Customers will also be able to add services including Disney+, DAZN, Spotify and Prime.

GlobalData sees the mobile-first availability as a potentially valuable differentiator, particularly as VodafoneThree looks to encourage customers towards fixed broadband and its 5G+ SuperMobile plans. Vodafone is also incorporating its 5G+ FastTrack quality-of-service feature into the wider video proposition.

However, the research firm argues that the TV offer will need to develop beyond mobile-only access if it is to become a meaningful driver of convergence. GlobalData analyst Natasha Rybak described the launch as an important addition to VodafoneThree’s portfolio but said stronger bundled incentives and operator-specific benefits will be important for encouraging wider multiplay adoption.

The launch therefore gives VodafoneThree a broader platform from which to combine connectivity, entertainment and digital services. How effectively the operator differentiates that proposition could determine the role television ultimately plays in its UK convergence strategy.
