TDF Broadens 5G Broadcast Pilot Across France

0

French network operator TDF has expanded its nationwide 5G Broadcast trial, extending the next-generation television distribution technology to additional regions across France as the industry continues to explore the future of terrestrial broadcasting.

The expanded pilot is designed to evaluate how 5G Broadcast can deliver live television and multimedia content directly to compatible mobile devices without relying on traditional mobile data networks. Unlike conventional streaming, the technology enables a single broadcast signal to reach unlimited users simultaneously, improving efficiency during high-demand events.

The wider rollout will allow TDF and its partners to assess network performance, device compatibility and potential consumer use cases across a broader geographical footprint. The project also supports ongoing discussions around the evolution of digital terrestrial television and how broadcasters can combine broadcast infrastructure with emerging 5G technologies.

As media consumption increasingly shifts towards smartphones and connected devices, 5G Broadcast is attracting growing attention from broadcasters, network operators and regulators seeking more scalable ways to deliver live content. The technology is viewed as a potential complement to traditional broadcasting while offering new opportunities for emergency communications, live sports and public service media.

The French trial reinforces TDF’s role in helping shape the future of broadcast distribution, positioning France among the European countries actively testing next-generation broadcast standards.
