Spotify Expands Its Connected TV Reach with Whale TV Launch

0

Spotify has extended its presence in the connected-TV market by launching its app across most television sets powered by Whale TV, bringing the audio streaming platform to millions of additional smart TVs worldwide.

The integration gives Whale TV users access to Spotify’s core music and podcast catalogue, alongside audiobooks and video in markets where those formats are supported. Existing subscribers can sign into their accounts directly from the television, while new users can register through the app.

The partnership gives Spotify access to a sizeable connected-TV footprint. According to Whale TV, its operating system currently powers more than 47.5 million monthly active televisions through relationships with over 400 TV brands.

For Whale TV, adding Spotify also supports its ambition to position the television as a broader home entertainment hub, rather than a screen dedicated primarily to traditional TV and video streaming. Music, podcasts and other audio formats increasingly form part of that connected-TV experience.

Lucas Huang, VP Content Distribution at Whale TV, highlighted this changing role of the television, arguing that the largest screen in the home is increasingly becoming the place where different entertainment formats coexist.

Spotify already has a broad presence across smart-TV operating systems, and its arrival on Whale TV further strengthens that distribution. At the same time, the deal helps Whale TV broaden its content proposition as independent TV operating systems compete to become comprehensive entertainment platforms.

The Spotify app is available now through the Whale TV app store on compatible models in markets where both services operate.
