ntv Expands Its Documentary Strategy with New Prime Video Subscription Channel

0

German news broadcaster ntv is extending its streaming footprint with ntv Doku, a new subscription service dedicated entirely to documentary programming and distributed through Amazon Prime Video. The channel launched on September 1, marking another step in ntv’s move beyond traditional linear broadcasting.

At launch, ntv Doku offers a catalogue of more than 250 documentaries representing over 500 hours of content. The service brings together programming covering current affairs and major societal issues alongside history, crime, mystery, knowledge and consumer-focused topics.

The channel is offered as an additional Prime Video subscription for €3.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial. By positioning the service within Prime Video, ntv can make its documentary catalogue available through an established streaming environment rather than relying solely on its own linear and digital distribution.

ntv is also using the service to create a new windowing strategy for its content. Selected documentary premieres will become available through ntv Doku before their traditional TV broadcasts, giving subscribers earlier access to some programmes.

The catalogue will continue to grow, with ntv planning to add around 100 hours of programming every year, including at least 30 German premieres. Existing documentary franchises will sit alongside exclusive titles and new releases.

The launch reinforces ntv’s ambition to develop as a cross-platform media brand, using streaming distribution to give its documentary portfolio a standalone proposition while complementing its established news and business coverage.
