Prime Video is expanding its news offering in the US with the introduction of curated playlists of on-demand news clips, giving viewers a quicker way to catch up on major national and local stories. The feature complements the live and full-length news programming already available through the platform.
Each playlist combines short-form videos from multiple news providers around a particular story or topic. The format is designed for viewers who want a concise overview rather than watching a full programme or waiting for a live news broadcast.
The approach also brings a more social-video-style experience into Prime Video. By organising brief clips around trending stories, the platform is moving into a viewing format increasingly associated with services such as TikTok, while keeping that content within the connected-TV environment.
News Clips are initially available through Prime Video’s dedicated US news destination on living-room devices. Viewers can access them through the Trending Topics and Local News carousels, with availability on mobile devices and the web scheduled to follow.
The broader news hub is available free to all Amazon customers in the US, regardless of whether they have a Prime membership. It already provides local, national and international coverage alongside a range of free 24/7 live news services.
Brian Griffin, Head of Global App Experience at Prime Video, said the new format is intended to help viewers quickly catch up on stories they may have missed live. Combined with its existing live channels and longer on-demand programmes, Prime Video is positioning the service as a more comprehensive news destination.
The company says it plans to continue expanding the news experience with additional content and features focused on convenient on-demand viewing, suggesting that short-form news could become a more significant component of Prime Video’s broader content strategy.
