Synamedia has launched a new edge-based watermarking technology designed to speed up the detection and disruption of pirated video streams, particularly for live and high-value content.
The solution, ContentArmor Edge Watermarking, embeds unique identifiers directly into compressed video streams at the CDN edge, enabling faster identification of leaks and reducing takedown times to under five minutes. By moving watermarking closer to the end user, the approach aims to significantly improve response times compared to traditional methods.
Unlike legacy A/B watermarking techniques — which rely on multiple content variants — the new system inserts watermarks dynamically at the edge using a lightweight agent. This not only accelerates extraction but also reduces bandwidth usage and infrastructure requirements by eliminating the need to distribute duplicate streams.
The platform is CDN-agnostic and initially integrates with Synamedia’s Fluid EdgeCDN, with broader compatibility expected. Beyond anti-piracy benefits, the company said the technology can also lower delivery costs for VoD services by streamlining content distribution.
Synamedia positions the launch as a breakthrough in making server-side watermarking viable at scale, overcoming long-standing technical limitations around processing power and encryption at the edge.
