Portuguese viewers are expected to watch part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on free television after RTP, SIC and TVI reportedly reached a deal with FIFA ahead of the tournament, which starts on 11 June 2026.
According to local reports, the agreement covers 20 matches, including every fixture involving the Portuguese national team. While neither FIFA nor the broadcasters have officially confirmed the arrangement, Portuguese media suggest negotiations have now advanced positively following weeks of uncertainty.
The possibility of the World Cup being available only through paid TV channels and streaming platforms had sparked concern among fans and regulators alike. Portugal’s media authority, ERC, previously underlined the importance of ensuring that major sporting events remain accessible to the wider public.
Earlier, the Portuguese Government had already designated Portugal’s World Cup matches as events of “general public interest”, a classification that grants free-to-air broadcasters the opportunity to negotiate broadcasting rights under fair market conditions.
Industry observers also point out that the upcoming tournament highlights the evolving media landscape, where traditional television and digital platforms are expected to complement each other in delivering coverage to audiences.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to kick off on 11 June.
