The BBC and Magic Light Pictures have announced that The Baddies, the latest animated adaptation of a beloved children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, will premiere this Christmas.
Following the success of previous festive animations such as The Gruffalo, Superworm and Tabby McTat, the new production continues the long-running partnership between the BBC and Magic Light Pictures that has become a staple of Christmas family viewing in the UK.
The Baddies follows a witch, a troll and an ancient ghost who delight in causing mischief, until a brave young girl decides it’s time to stand up to them. The story combines humour, adventure and the distinctive storytelling style that has made Donaldson and Scheffler’s adaptations a recurring holiday favourite.
For the BBC, the announcement reinforces the importance of exclusive family programming during the festive season, while Magic Light Pictures continues to expand one of the most successful children’s animation franchises in European broadcasting.
The project also highlights the enduring value of premium original content for public broadcasters as they compete for audiences across traditional television, streaming and on-demand platforms.
