STUDIOCANAL Gives Its Classic Film Library a New Global Identity

0

STUDIOCANAL is putting greater focus on its film heritage with the launch of STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS, a new international label created to showcase, restore and reintroduce titles from its extensive cinema catalogue to audiences worldwide.

The initiative draws on a library of more than 18,000 films covering over a century of cinema, which STUDIOCANAL describes as the largest film collection outside the United States. The new branding will provide a dedicated identity for the group’s classic-film activity across international markets.

Restoration will play a central role in the strategy. During the past seven years, STUDIOCANAL has invested close to €25 million in restoring approximately 1,000 films in 4K, creating a substantial pipeline of titles that can now be brought back to cinemas and home-entertainment audiences.

The company is not only targeting established film enthusiasts. STUDIOCANAL also sees an opportunity to introduce heritage cinema to younger generations, particularly as platforms such as Letterboxd encourage audiences to discover and discuss films beyond current theatrical releases.

Among the first films receiving theatrical releases under STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS are a restored version of Michael Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut, a global re-release of James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and a new 4K edition of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth.

The label will also extend into home entertainment, with titles including Blood Simple Director’s Cut, Inside Llewyn Davis, Accident, Chaplin and Un Flic. Looking further ahead, STUDIOCANAL has already revealed plans for a curated David Lynch collection in 2027.

With STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS, the company is effectively treating its back catalogue as an active content asset rather than simply an archive—combining restoration, curation and renewed distribution to give established films another commercial and cultural life.
