Belgian telecom provider Telenet has upgraded its TV-box voice control with a new AI-driven natural language search, aiming to make content discovery faster and more intuitive across live television and integrated streaming services. The search results are displayed in a visual format directly on-screen for easy navigation.
Voice search has been part of the Telenet TV experience since 2019, but the company now positions itself as the first in Belgium to enhance the feature with artificial intelligence. This move addresses the increasing difficulty viewers face when navigating a complex landscape of TV channels, streaming platforms, and content bundles. Currently, voice search is used approximately 200,000 times weekly, primarily for locating shows, movies, actors, or jumping directly to specific channels.
With this AI upgrade, users can ask more complex or conversational questions using everyday language. The system can interpret queries based on genre, themes, actors, or even memorable quotes and settings. Example requests shared by Telenet include: “Find me a comedy with Tom Hanks” or “Which movie has the line: ‘May the Force be with you’?”
The feature is launching first in Dutch as a beta version, with interested users invited to register for early access. A wider release to all Telenet TV-box customers is scheduled for 2026. Telenet also noted that integration with some streaming services is still in progress and not yet fully included in the smart search experience.
