Funke Mediengruppe to acquire Wetter.com from ProSiebenSat.1

German media conglomerate ProSiebenSat.1 has reached an agreement to divest its online weather platform, wetter.com, to Funke Mediengruppe, as part of a broader strategy to refocus on its core entertainment operations. This acquisition will allow Funke to further expand its digital media footprint.

The deal, executed as an asset transaction, entails the transfer of ProSiebenSat.1’s fully owned subsidiary within its Commerce & Ventures division. Approximately 100 staff members will move to Funke under a business transfer agreement. Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed. Completion of the sale is contingent on regulatory approval, with closure anticipated in the first quarter of 2026.

ProSiebenSat.1 stated that this move aligns with its active portfolio streamlining efforts, enabling the company to better concentrate on entertainment content and use the proceeds to strengthen its financial position and reduce debt.

Originally co-founded by ProSiebenSat.1 in 2000 as a media partner, wetter.com became wholly owned by the group in 2014 and was subsequently integrated into its digital unit. The platform has grown to become one of the top two online weather services in the German-speaking market. It also operates across 15 European countries through localized sites like tiempo.es and weather24.com, with offices in Konstanz, Berlin, and Munich.

Florian Hirschberger, CEO of Commerce & Ventures at ProSiebenSat.1, highlighted the sale as part of a deliberate strategic shift:“Selling wetter.com is a continuation of our focus on entertainment. Over the past decade, ProSiebenSat.1 has developed the brand into a market leader, supported by extensive TV campaigns. I’m confident that the team at wetter.com will thrive under Funke’s ownership. I want to thank managing director Marius Neumann and his team for their dedication and wish them continued success.”

Funke’s Chief Digital Officer and Executive Board member Stephan Thurm referred to the acquisition as one of the company’s most significant in recent years:“This is a major step for Funke Digital. Weather content has long been a top draw on our websites, so integrating wetter.com into our digital portfolio is a natural fit. It also complements our journalistic offerings.”

The purchase of wetter.com marks Funke’s ninth acquisition this year, adding to recent deals involving platforms such as praktischArzt, Medi-Karriere, everbay, Gala, Brigitte, Eltern, Chefkoch, and Kitchen Stories.
